Regina and I ventured south to see our grandson, Leo, play the part of the Scarecrow as never before portrayed in the classic, The Wizard of Oz. Of course, he was the star of the show. But, there were a lot of grandparents in the audience, so, I imagine Leo was not a unanimous choice for Best Actor.
Driving south, we stopped at a McDonald's for a cup of coffee in Calhoun, Georgia. A large sign on the cash stand said, Please order at the kiosk.
I wanted to pay cash, so, we stood at the cash register waiting for service. Several workers standing at the drive up window looked at us, looked away, looked at us once more, then, dispersed. We left without our morning coffee. Next stop? Dunkin '. Cash may still be king, but, it is fading fast.
By the way, why would corporate drop Donuts from the Dunkin' name?
A full size billboard in Tennessee demanded in huge letters, BIDEN, FIX THE DAMN BORDER!
Buc-ee's billboards are entertaining. My favorite message was outside Atlanta on I-75 and included a picture of Buc-ee and the script, You had me at hodwy (correct spelling). Is it an advertising gimmick? Some kind of code? Could Buc-ee's be trying to get on the viral comet? Could it be as simple as the advertising agency made a print mistake?
Downtown New Port Richey, Florida, on the banks of the Cottee River, is enjoying a booming renaissance. Jeremy and Nora took us to a restaurant called, Estuary, last Saturday night and it was an excellent choice.
As we walked amidst the bright lights after dinner, we saw restaurants and bars doing a brisk business. Great to see a revived city hub.
A boat ride on the Gulf under blue skies Sunday afternoon capped our weekend stay.
In my experience, Atlanta may qualify as the worst city in the United States to navigate in or around or through or over, maybe even under.
WAKY-AM 790 is a legendary Louisville radio station which first went on the air in 1958. Its claim to fame was etched in stone on the altar of early Rock and Roll when on its inaugural broadcast, the station played non stop for 24 hours, the multi-million selling record, Purple People Eater, by Sheb Wooley.
Today, the call letters belong to an FM frequency. WAKY-FM plays 1970s through 1990s Rock and Roll, Monday through Friday. Weekends are devoted to mainly Vintage Rock and Roll.
A couple weekends ago, I tuned in to see what the station sounded like in 2024. I was greeted by a classic Rolling Stones hit. So far, so good. But, right after the song ended, the air personality thanked the sponsors of, The Weekend Oldies Extravaganza. Heading the list of paying customers was...The Cremation Society of Kentucky.
HUH? What's up with that?
I walked into the Kroger Pharmacy and asked for a water-based nasal spray as per my doctor's instructions. The pharmacist said, I don't think we have that.
A trip to a local CVS drug store netted the same result.
Just when I was about to call my doctor and say, Guess what? I thought I would try a third choice. The Walgreen's pharmacist told me, Oh, you want a Saline Mist. Mission Accomplished.
The Oxford University Press named Rizz its word of the year. Slang for, charming another person.
Could there be a correlation between the lack of Christmas cards sent and received last December and a decline in religion in America? Or, are we just making a choice not to send traditional Christmas greetings?
When did political alignment with Russia become part of the Republican Party platform? Many of our country's congressional leaders would stand taller by taking a page out of Alexei Navalny's handbook.
It is cool that Stanford, Harvard, and, the University of California each have a course on, Taylor Swift.
It will take a few more trial runs, but, I am going to conquer the fabuloso panini sandwiches we had in Italy. So far, no luck. I can't find the right flat bread.
The Italian version included a thick slice of egg plant, sliced tomatoes, strips of green peppers, a slice of red onion, and, a slice of mozzarella cheese, all placed on top of a thin, round, flat bread, broiled, then folded over.
It won't be long before we won't have to think at all. Grammerly advertising invites you to write a sentence in its program, then, tell the program the emotion or attitude you want the sentence to reflect. Grammerly will rewrite the sentence in the tone you desire. Good or bad AI?
Regina and I took a trip to Laurel, Mississippi. More on that in oddities, observations, & ?'s...#12.
Did anyone else think of Bonnie Tyler's 1983 song title during all the excitement about the Total Eclipse?
The University of Kentucky Athletic Director issued a press release last month that in essence said, Coach John Calipari will return next year. I liked ESPN's take on the need for the AD to speak when it said, If a school has to announce a coach is coming back, it is time for that coach to leave.
Coming up: a sit down with a motorcycle outlaw turned evangelist; a dinner with the George Brothers; another oddities, observations & ?'s, and; a take on social media from some folks under 30.
And, finally. We are avid readers in this house. Regina prefers the public library, while I help keep Barnes and Noble afloat. However, with the rising costs of paperback books, I may be forced to join her in support of the tax supported institution.
As an example, I have read the entire Agatha Christie collection over the past 60 years and recently started rereading them. The first Christie book I purchased was two-ninety-nine. My latest purchase was 17 ninety-nine.
HUH? What's up with that?
