oddities, observations, & ?'s...#12

Summertime is here and it is a perfect time to take a road trip in Red Thunder.  I have wanted to drive to  California in my Thunderbird convertible for several years, but, I can't find a sidekick for the adventure.

I suspect the lack of interest by others in such a journey may have something to do with my needing to take a break from driving every 45 minutes to an hour.  That doesn't include sightseeing.

Only my wife, Regina, can put up with my travel routine and she doesn't want to drive as far as the west coast because she has her limits too.

My son and daughter each told me they would drive out west with me, but, fly back home.  That means I would be driving back to Louisville by myself and I don't want to do that.  So, for now, the glamour of Route 66 is on hold.

Several weeks ago, I underwent a hospital test procedure with negative results.  Prior to being released, the doctor came in the room and gave me the good news.  Just as he was leaving, he turned and said, Oh, by the way, because of your age, you won't need this test again so unless something else comes up, this is it.

  HUH?  What's up with that?

As the presidential season moves forward, I dislike the two candidates more and more. How is it possible these are the best people America has to offer?  Any chance Mitt Romney or any other intelligent moderate could join this race?

No one seems able to remedy the fixation on violence that prevails in our country.  The Trump shooting is reminiscent of the attempted assassination of Louisville Mayoral candidate, Craig Greenburg in 2022.  A lone gunman barged into his office and started randomly shooting at the six people confined in the small space.  Miraculously, no one was injured.

My wife and I were standing in line waiting to be seated at a riverside fish house when we started a conversation with a woman behind us.

Our new acquaintance was lamenting the shortage of talent in her particular medical field.  She told us about one case in her hospital in which an infant who needs around the clock medical attention had been in the hospital for one full year because there are not enough home pediatric nurses available to care for the child at home.

While walking down the soft drink aisle of my supermarket, I spotted a free standing Coca Cola display.  It boasted a colorful sign that touted, Limited Edition: Co-created with artificial intelligence.

Regina and I were in Laurel, Mississippi last March when we walked by a radio station in downtown Laurel.  A large picture window allowed us to look into what I assume was the main studio. Typical of the past 20 years, Super Talk Mississippi was completely automated.  No mortals in sight and it was two o'clock in the afternoon.

The proliferation of car washes, coffee shops and dental offices in Louisville is remarkable.  It reminds me of when there were full-serve service stations on every other corner.  Back in the day, we called them, gas stations.

Chick-Fil- A must be trying to wean its customers from inside dining.  We stopped at a newly constructed CFA on our way to Mississippi and there were only two cash stands and just one was operational.  The dining room was far less aesthetic than its ancestors and had fewer windows too.

Car manufacturers aren't producing sedans.  They say consumers only want sports cars, SUVs and trucks.  Assuming that is true, why is it so hard to find a regular, old school sedan on a used car lot?  I am looking for one and one dealer told me, Regular cars are gone the day or day after they get here.

How does the banning of prayers in public schools by the Supreme Court in 1963 mesh with Oklahoma requiring the teaching of the Bible in classrooms?

It is past time for Supreme Court Justices to follow some standards or code of ethics.

While it appears America has gone to the dogs in terms of dollars spent on their canine friends, consider the super rich who can afford to spend big bucks on a Svallin.

According to New Yorker MagazineSvallin dogs, which can cost $150,000 and up, are protection assets that have the personality of a family pet., Bred in Montana and trained for two years, they are a canine status symbol for the rural elite.

Speaking of Richie Rich, Realtor.com reports the median home price in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is two point nine million dollars.

My wife and I were at a luncheon recently and the subject of age came up.  The husband of one of the guests made this observation:  I know I am getting old when the music I hear when I walk into an elevator is the music I used to party to.

We drove to Milford, Ohio to check out a car my son, Jeremy, found in Autotrader.  I was returning to the interstate after a refueling break and noticed the ramp was extremely bumpy.

In fact, there were waves, dips and creases making the ride uncomfortable at best. When we got to the bottom of the ramp ready to merge with traffic, the very bottom, not the beginning, there was a permanent sign on the side of the road that read, Bumpy Road.

Coming up:  an interview with a motorcycle outlaw turned evangelist; another job$ somebody's gotta do; a legacy #2, and; a lunch with the George Brothers.

And, finally.  I am grateful and honored to be this year's recipient of the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters, John King Award.  It is an award given to broadcast educators, both college and high school, for his or her record of excellence while teaching.,

Regina and I drove to Indy to the IHSAA Headquarters on North Meridian for the presentation during the IASB Summer Workshop held there earlier this week.

It was heart warming to catch up with a few old friends including former Franklin Central High School Athletic Director, Brian Avery and WTHR news and sports reporter, Rich Nye.

  HUHWhat's up with that?
