oddities, observations, & ?'s...#16

Most of this post was written last June.  Health issues prevented me from gathering content, researching and writing.  I am grateful to be pounding the keyboard to finish this post and for future publications.

A tribute to the most talented man I ever worked with in my radio career.  Gary Burbank passed away at the age of 84.  He was Earl Pitts, Eunice and Berniece, and, so many other rich and colorful characters.  He was a husband and a father.  He was memorable.

Brevard County, Florida, Sheriff, Wayne Ivey, held a press conference in Florida prior to President Donald Trump's military parade which was held in the nation's capitol last Father's Day.  In his speech, the peace officer warned protesters that anyone who threw a brick or any other object while protesting the parade would be ...shot graveyard dead.

  HUHWhat's up with that

If our mother had had her way, one of the four George Brothers would have been a pharmacist.  I imagine she only gave up on her wish when her last son graduated college with a teaching certificate.  Ruth never explained herself or told us why she was so enamored with the idea of having a pharmacist in the family and I never asked.  I wish I had.

Some words and a phrase or two I use which will never be uttered, muttered, or, otherwise spoken  by my grandchildren.  Malarkey, iota clean as a whistle, clear as mud, snafu, shyster.

Leaving the supermarket, I put my bags of groceries in my car on a sunny Sunday afternoon.  The car was clean and the top was down.

I left the parking lot with WAKY's Way Back Weekend on the radio.  Eddie Cockran's Summertime Blues, followed by Dylan and Clapton's Knockin' on Heaven's Door from the '73 movie, Billy the Kid,  and,  Rod Stewart's Hot Legs, all aired back to back.  Great radio and a great ride home.

The definition of censorship?  The leader of America taking away the budget for NPR and Public Radio.  Even more frightening is the president ordering all Smithsonian Institution displays to be in keeping with his philosophies.  All WOKE displays, artifacts and depictions will be ...history.

My brother, Ken, and his wife, Jody, recently returned from an Alaskan cruise.  When they boarded the ship, they were each handed a medallion containing a GPS to wear around their wrist or neck.  Each of them would know the location of the other at all times.

I don't understand why one of the television networks hasn't sued President Trump for slander.  Clearly, the term, Fake News, defames the credibility of any news agency.  Part of the hesitation could be that network affiliates are licensed through the FCC, a government entity.  Retaliation and retribution are part of the deal with this administration.

The oldest television repair shop in the world is right here in Louisville.  Clarksdale TV Repair has been in business since 1938.

Regina and I took a daytrip to Loretto, Kentucky last August.  Our destination was Maker's Mark Distillery.  It was our first such outing in several months due to health issues and it proved to be a worthy test for future excursions.  It was great to be back to an adventure.

We didn't tour the manufacturing facility, but, wanted to walk around to see the Dale Chihuly glass art exhibition which features nine large-scale installations across the distillery grounds.  It took a crew of six people 30 days to set up the exhibition and will take the same number of workers to transport all of the unique exhibit to Seattle in December.

Lunch was at Star Hill Provisions, a farm to table restaurant on the distillery grounds.

The Maker's Mark gift shop was packed with tourists.  Pullover shirts with the distiller's logo selling for $180 were going out the door like they were at a Going Out Of Business Sale at Old Navy.

Maker's Mark products were plentiful and for an additional $30, I could have bought any size bottle of bourbon and applied my own red wax sealer, the company's famous trademark.  I wanted to do that, but, I let the price talk me out of it. Now, I wish I had made the purchase.

I had an MRI the other day.  It was my first one.  What an experience. Since I am claustrophobic, I requested an open ended machine.  I would be just fine if I never had to do another one.

A new chiropractor opened for business in Louisville.  A large electric sign above the door reads...THE JOINT. followed by Chiropractor in small letters.

How did I not know?  I always assumed prunes were its own fruit.  It was a surprise to learn a prune is a plum.

Regina and I have a somewhat ongoing minor dispute that erupts depending upon who is driving and who is in the passenger seat.  Here is the deal.

She contends the proper way to make a left turn is to stop behind the painted white line on the pavement approaching an intersection.  When the last oncoming vehicle has passed her, she will then execute her turn.

I maintain the way I was taught in Driver's Ed at Broad Ripple High in 1958 is the correct procedure.  Pull halfway into the intersection, stop and wait for all oncoming traffic to pass by before completing the turn.

Coming up:  Another POS; an interview with a former UPS pilot which was conducted prior to the fatal crash of a UPS cargo jet this week in Louisville;  a job$ somebody's gotta do, and; another oddities, observations & 's.

And, finally.  My grandsons, Leo, 12, and, Dallas, 10, asked me my favorite 10 top musical acts since the start of rock and roll.  I chose to list the 10 most influential acts instead of favorites.  Not everyone will agree.  I stayed with mainstream artists only.

(No certain order)  Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Bee Gees, Temptations, Diana Ross, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Chuck Berry.

Any music lover could look at any artist or group on that list and say...

   HUHWhat's up with that...one?
